Designated Survivor has been revived, and has moved from ABC to Netflix.
The political drama, easily one of the most underrated TV shows in history, was unceremoniously canceled earlier in the year, but a new showrunner in the form of esteemed writer and producer Neal Baer (ER, Under the Dome, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), has thankfully now picked it up, negotiating a new spot with Netflix to air Designated Survivor’s third series over ten episodes.
Baer is the fifth showrunner for Designated Survivor, and knowingly comes on board to captain a shaky ship through stormy waters. Both Baer and star Kiefer Sutherland, who are good friends, will be executive producers on the series.
Sutherland, not known as being one of easiest people to work with in entertainment, has publicly approved the numerous changes and thorough revamping of the show.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play President Kirkman for season 3 of Designated Survivor with Netflix and Neal Baer,” Sutherland told Variety. “I believe this format will allow us to continue to delve deeply into storylines and issues concerning the American electorate that were not previously possible.”
Designated Survivor had a rough second season ratings-wise in 2017, yet the series was still seen as having a decent shot at maintaining a third term on ABC until it was axed outright. Reasons for the show’s cancellation were apparently due to these declining ratings, rising production costs and Sutherland’s contract terms stating that the show be moved from Toronto to Los Angeles in its third season; which for the ABC network was far too costly an endeavor.
Although the show has had a tumultuous life-cycle so far, it has been quality television throughout. It will be refreshing to see it revived and re-jigged on Netflix.
The core cast of Designated Survivor, including Sutherland, Kal Penn, Adan Canto, and Italia Ricci, are set to return, with Maggie Q in talks to join them again also. Production on a ‘new look’ Season 3 is set to begin later this year for a 2019 premiere.
