After taking a decade-and-a-half-long break from stand-up comedy, Ellen DeGeneres is back on stage, with a feature airing on Netflix this December.
The special was filmed during the comedian’s first stand-up tour in 15 years and was entitled An Evening with Ellen DeGeneres. The stand-up comedy tour visited San Francisco, San Diego, and Seattle for just over a week.
The Netflix version of the show is called Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable.
The Relatable TV trailer (below) shows DeGeneres dancing, discussing her decision to return to stand-up comedy, her life, and her amazing career as a talk show host. She further explains her first attempt at a stand-up comedy event, including anecdotes about the cancellation of her sitcom Ellen in 1998 after revealing she was a lesbian.
“I lost my sitcom when I came out, and it took three years for me to get back on television,” DeGeneres says in the almost two-minute trailer. “There was this one station manager that said, ‘No one is gonna watch a lesbian during the day.’ And I said, ‘Well, they weren’t watching me at night, what time of day is good for a lesbian?’”
The TV trailer (below) features DeGeneres walking onstage and waving to a cheering crowd, just like her daytime show – this time with more jokes.
“A friend of mine was at my house, and I told him, ‘I’m gonna do stand-up again,’ and he said, ‘Really?’ and I said, ‘Yeah, I was hoping for more of a really?!’ And he said, ‘Well, do you think you’re still relatable?'” Then she jokes about how her butler walked in on the conversation.
DeGeneres also pokes fun her talk show host persona in the set. “A few years ago I started ending my show by saying, ‘Be kind to one another,’ but here’s the downside: I can never do anything unkind, ever,” she says. “I shouldn’t even have a horn in my car. Like, if someone cuts me off in a dangerous way, if I honk, they’re like, ‘Ellen?!'”
Clips of her performing dances on stage then follow, she then delivers a joke about the ‘issue’ she has with emotional support animals on airplanes: “You’re walking down the aisle to your seat, which is 10B or whatever it is. It’s like Noah’s Ark. There’s a woman with a ferret. There’s a man with a mongoose. There’s a lady with a donkey,” she says. “I say 10B. Does a plane go back that far? I’ve never been back there.”
Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable will be available to stream on Netflix from Dec 18th, 2018.
