Lizzie is all about Lizzie Borden. If you know your history, or watch a lot of Netflix, this might be a notorious name you are familiar with?
Before you book your tickets to go see Lizzie this September it might pay to read up on her history – as it is extremely interesting, and just a little disturbing.
Lizzie Andrew Borden was an American woman who gained considerable notoriety as the main suspect in the 1892 axe killings of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. She was acquitted of these murders, and in turn became the ‘OJ Simpson’ of her time.
The murder case, and Lizzie herself, became an America-wide media sensation, and she became a household name for a generation. It is no surprise then that Lizzie’s story has been depicted in various films, TV series, theatrical productions, literary works and folk rhymes.
Chloë Sevigny (Lizzie) and Kristen Stewart (the family’s housemaid ‘Bridget’) star in this R-rated big-screen version of the story, alongside Jeff Perry (her father) and Fiona Shaw (his wife, Lizzie’s stepmother).
Mystery and speculation have always abounded in regards to this cold-case, and whether or not Lizzie actually committed the crime will assuredly never be known. This mysterious element, plus a whole lot of lace and sideburns, make for a great (if not somewhat gruesome) chick-flick; complete with the star of Twilight.
In the new trailer, it is seen that Lizzie has a romantic fling, and this seems to be the catalyst for the grizzly murders that have left so many questions a century later.
If you would like to immerse yourself in Lizzie’s world before you see the film, there is plenty to watch. For starters, there is The Lizzie Borden Chronicles on Netflix, and also the film on which this series was a spin-off: Lizzie Borden Took an Ax. Both offerings are fictionalized and speculative, as is the new film – but a bit of bloody fiction based on fact never hurt anyone.
