Mayans MC: 10 Days Away! Can it Top Sons of Anarchy?

Mayans, Instabamm

The creators of Sons of Anarchy take their story arc next level, giving Mayans MC its own series.

Every Sons of Anarchy fan in the world was somewhat saddened by the end of the hit FX TV show, not only because the beloved series was wrapping, but also because the ending was a literal killer.

Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) bit the dust. Everyone knew he was going out, just not how. His true fate (purposely riding his Harley into a semi-trailer) came at the end of several seasons that had severely dipped in quality, so the end, however sad, also carried some relief.

There have been rumors of a prequel to SOA, focusing on the exploits of John Teller, Jax’s Dad and founding member of the MC – but – they are exactly that, rumors; and though spoken about often by Sons creators, have not yet come into fruition.

SOA creators Kurt Sutter and Elgin James have expanded the Sons universe in a completely different direction than expected, now giving fans the gift of a new spinoff called Mayans M.C. If you regularly watched what the boys of SAMCROW got up to, then you know that the Mayans started out in the initial SOA seasons as blood enemies. By the end, however, they had become the Sons trusted friends and allies in the fight against, well, just about everybody.

Mayans M.C. premieres in approximately ten days on FX, and it looks like it may deliver? It’s a full 90 minutes long and introduces main characters that are all Harley ridin’ Latino gang-bangers and their associates.

As big Sons fans, the staff here at instabamm are hoping for a little redemption with Mayans. SOA became a ‘one man band’ towards the end, with Charlie Hunnam being the only redeeming feature in a show that had lost most of its grace. The writing had become lazy, the backing characters were weak and getting weaker, and those musical montages! Sheesh. It’s like they were a way to fill in time for desperate screenwriters pushing things uphill. The show far exceeded its use-by date.

There are some Sons remnants and crossovers in Mayans, as it is a spinoff after all. Yet, it looks like this production is a step up in quality; and with fresh characters to write about, and new talent wanting to impress, it could potentially kick right off.

Check out the official synopsis and trailer…

‘Set in a post-Jax Teller world, Mayans MC sees EZ Reyes, a former golden boy now fresh out of prison, as a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California-Mexico border who must carve out his new outlaw identity.’

Yes, he’s like a Latino Jax Teller to a certain degree; but his story looks extremely interesting. Another ‘good kid morphs into a ruthless killer’ story? Most definitely – but who’s complaining?

The lead character is ‘Ezekiel ‘EZ’ Reyes’ played by the relatively new JD Pardo. Looking at the trailer, it seems the kid does have some presence on-screen, and by all appearances he has been well cast. Can he give Sons and Jax Teller a run for their money? We say absolutely!

His on-screen Dad is veteran actor/legend Edward James Olmos, who can only bring quality to the show. Emilio Rivera returns as ‘bloodthirsty but fair’ Mayans President ‘Alvarez’ too, so this is terrific news, potentially making for great TV.

The biggest lacking factor in Sons was the backing characters, so let’s hope the rest of the cast measures up this time. From watching the Mayans trailer they seem totally believable as cutthroat gang members, so we are satisfied, for now.

The only true fault we can see in the trailer is that a good female presence is clearly missing. What would Sons of Anarchy have been without Katy Segal, or Animal Kingdom without Ellen Barkin? This is something that Sutter and James should probably work on since right now the show is a bit dude-centric.

Let’s hope this is rectified throughout the storyline, and that Mayans MC kicks some serious storytelling ass! This a show we will definitely be watching.

A full review of the first episode will be out straight after the premiere.

Mayans M.C airs Wednesday September 5th on FX.
