HBO has just released several new Watchmen pictures featuring a mysterious ‘Tulsa Police’ force.
It’s been just over a month since the first image for Damon Lindelof’s upcoming Watchmen TV series adaptation was shown, but to keep the fan interest rolling HBO has now offered up two brand new motion pics on the Watchmen’s official Instagram page. The new images follow in the same vein of the previous release, focusing on a mysterious police force wearing exceptionally bright yellow masks.
Who are these strange new police figures? No one knows yet. This is the mystery that is driving HBO’s introduction to Lindelof’s TV Series adaption of Watchmen.
But…if you look closely, you can see the words ‘Tulsa Police’ on the arm badges of the officers lined up in the corridor, and the same words also painted onto the side of the squad car. Strangely, it seems the new Watchmen will take place in Oklahoma. No one was expecting that, as the original series was set in New York City.
These new photos, and the whole ‘Tulsa’ setting, make it clear Lindelof is not joking about taking a new angle on Watchmen for his adaptation. The yellow police force shown in the pics are not from the original material, namely the 1986 graphic novel written by Alan Moore.
“We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago,” Lindelof wrote on social media after the show was announced. “They will, however, be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we’d be fools to not sample them. Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along, it did not erase what came before it.”
Noted filmmaker Zack Snyder previously adapted Watchmen into a heavily underrated feature in 2009. It received outstanding reviews but tanked at the box office – yet this ultraviolent classic is still regarded by true fans of the ‘supe’ genre as one of the best superhero films ever made.
Let’s hope the TV series version of Watchmen is somewhere similar in quality and badassery, and that the Watchmen cast is half as good as the Snyder film. If so – take our money NOW.
Lindelof’s new Watchmen cast includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr, and Don Johnson. Watchmen is Lindelof’s first television project since the end of The Leftovers, which aired on HBO for three seasons. He has also been heavily involved in projects such as Cowboys & Aliens, Prometheus, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Tomorrowland.
HBO will debut Watchmen in 2019.
